Job Description
Position Purpose:
The Watch Engineer is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the Veolia Energy CoGen facility at Kings Plaza, Brooklyn, NY. This includes chilled water production, Deutz engines, electrical generating equipment, satellite facilities, and the utility distribution system. The Watch Engineer will support the Chief Engineer in daily operations and routine operating maintenance to ensure reliability, compliance, and optimal performance of all plant systems.
Primary Duties/Responsibilities:
- Operate, monitor, and maintain chilled water systems, Deutz engines, electrical generating equipment, utility distribution systems, pumps, cooling towers, and auxiliary equipment.
- Participate in plant start-up, control, shutdown, and inspections.
- Monitor instrumentation and the Distributed Control System (DCS) to ensure safe and efficient operations; identify causes of alarms or issues and take corrective action.
- Perform routine inspections, log readings, and prepare operating reports.
- Conduct preventive and routine maintenance, including valve adjustments, cylinder head replacements, spark plug changes, and cleaning of pumps and water conditioning equipment.
- Troubleshoot operational issues and complete minor repairs as needed.
- Perform regular inspection tours of the plant and distribution system, including electrical systems.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, safety regulations, and environmental requirements.
- Support energy efficiency, reliability, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Provide clear turnover reports and communication between shifts.
- Any other operational or mechanical task assigned by management, chief or foreman.
- Emergency response: Respond to plant emergencies, alarms, and abnormal conditions in accordance with established procedures.
- Familiar with Word, Excel and goggle sheets.
Work Environment:
- Able to work in variable temperature/noise environments.
Qualifications
Education/Experience/Background:
- High School Diploma/GED is required.
- 5 years of experience in operating stationary or marine boilers.
- 2 years of experience leading or supervising a team of technicians or plant operators.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Proficient in Lock-out/Tag-out and Safety Tagging (STS) systems.
- Working knowledge of computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), such as Maximo, and building automation/distributed control systems.
- Ability to troubleshoot both mechanical and electrical systems.
- Capable of working all shifts, weekends, and holidays as required.
- Demonstrated maturity, reliability, and judgment to stand watch independently
Required Certification/Licenses/Training:
- Must hold and maintain a valid Q-01 refrigeration license, S-95, S-12, S13 and A-35 certification and other additional COF’s required by Plant management.
- Must hold and maintain a valid driver’s license.
Physical Requirements:
- The job can be physically demanding involving movement of heavy equipment and carrying materials up and down stairs.
- Candidates should be able to lift a 50-lb load.
Additional Information
Pay Range: $59.00 to $62.36 per hour.
