Job Description

Position Purpose:

The role of the Maintenance Planner is to improve workforce productivity and work quality by anticipating and eliminating potential delays through planning and coordination of manpower, parts and material, and equipment access. The individual is responsible for planning, scheduling and coordination of all plannable maintenance work performed on the plant site. The planning and scheduling function is the hub from which all plannable maintenance activity is coordinated. It is the process of describing a job in terms of how it is to be performed and what resources will be required. The planner is not involved in unscheduled emergency and urgent work. The first day from a planner’s perspective is “next week.” An effective planner will significantly increase craft’s wrench time by ensuring the work, information and tools are prepared ahead of time and the travel time is minimized.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Knows the job well enough that he/she can describe what is to be accomplished and can estimate how many man-hours will be required.
  • Is the principal contact and liaison person between Maintenance and Operations and other supported departments
  • Is responsible for long-range as well as short-range planning. Long-range planning involves the regular analysis of backlog relative to available resources. These two basic variables must be kept in balance if a proactive maintenance environment is to be established and sustained.
  • Short-range planning and scheduling falls into eight phases:
    • Initial Job Screening.
    • Analysis of Job Requirements.
    • Job Research.
    • Detailed Job Planning.
    • Job Preparation.
    • Procurement.
    • Job Scheduling and Coordination.
    • Daily Schedule Adjustment.
  • Distribution of the Planner Day:
    • Job Screening 5%
    • Job Requirements 10%
    • Job Research 5%
    • Detailed Job Planning 20%
    • Job Preparation 5%
    • Procurement 20%
    • Job Scheduling 15%
    • Daily Schedule Adjustments 5%
    • Job Close Out 5%
    • Personal and Miscellaneous 10%
  • Administers management policies and directives, trains and evaluates subordinate staff including administering discipline as required.
  • Promotes safety practices and procedures by training employees, reporting on unsafe conditions and by filing reports on injuries.

Work Environment:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Qualifications

Education/Experience/Background:

  • High School Diploma/GED is required.
  • Bachelors in Mechanical, Maintenance, or Electrical Engineering required.
  • Masters Degree is preferred.
  • Minimum of five years of relevant experience in Maintenance Planning, with preferred experience in heavy manufacturing, chemical, refining or utilities industry.
  • Two to three years of experience working with Reliability Centered Maintenance.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Requires superior interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with clients, public, employees, etc.
  • Excellent management and organizational skills are also required.
  • Must possess superior organizational skills and be able to prioritize and work simultaneously on several projects.
  • Ability to operate within a team atmosphere.
  • Ability to shift priorities frequently and effectively perform under pressure.
  • Ability to operate computer, typewriter and other office machines as needed.
  • Strong basic mathematics and computer skills (Microsoft Suite products, CMMS).
  • Ability to plan, schedule and evaluate the quality and quantity of work needed to accomplish work group goals within set limits of time and cost.
  • Ability to coordinate assignments with other sections, departments or agencies.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise records, reports and other written materials.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, drawings, specifications and sketches pertaining to the work.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment in performing assignments.
  • Must be able to respond to emergency calls as needed and work extended hours to accommodate UW needs.

Required Certification/Licenses/Training:

  • Valid Louisiana Driver’s License.

Physical Requirements:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.
  • The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; climb stairs or ladders; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and taste or smell.
  • The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to distinguish color, close vision and distance vision.
