Job Description

​​The Substitute Preschool Instructor provides temporary instructional and classroom support to ensure continuity of care and high-quality early childhood education during the absence of regular staff. This role supports the social-emotional, developmental, and educational needs of children ages 2–5 in alignment with California Department of Education (CDE) early learning frameworks and Community Care Licensing (Title 22) regulations. The Substitute Preschool Instructor works collaboratively with site leadership and classroom teams to maintain a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate learning environment. This position reports directly to the Preschool Program Manager. ​

Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • ​​​​Provide developmentally appropriate instruction and supervision to preschool-aged children in accordance with center curriculum, daily schedules, and licensing requirements.
  • ​Maintain a safe, clean, and nurturing classroom environment that meets all Community Care Licensing (Title 22) health and safety standards.
  • ​Support children’s social-emotional development, positive behavior, and engagement in learning activities.
  • ​Implement classroom routines, transitions, and activities as directed by the lead teaching team or site leadership.
  • ​Supervise children at all times, including during indoor/outdoor play, meals, and rest periods.
  • ​Maintain appropriate child-to-staff ratios in compliance with Title 22 regulations.
  • ​Communicate professionally and respectfully with staff, administrators, and families as needed.
  • ​Follow all mandated reporter responsibilities and center policies regarding child safety, supervision, and confidentiality.
  • ​Accurately document incidents, injuries, or concerns per center policy and licensing requirements.
  • ​Step into classrooms with minimal notice and adapt to different classroom structures and age groups.
  • This position will provide coverage on an on-call basis at our locations in Lost Hills, CA or Delano, CA.
  • ​Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • ​Must hold one of the following permits/credentials:
    • ​Child Development (CD) Associate Teacher permit or higher permit
    • ​Emergency 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit
    • ​Emergency Substitute Teaching Permit for Prospective Teachers
    • ​Multiple Subject Teaching Credential
  • ​Previous experience working with preschool-aged children in a licensed child care or early learning setting preferred.
  • ​Pediatric CPR and first aid training through an approved program
  • ​Mandated Reporter training completion (or ability to complete upon hire).
  • ​Must pass DOJ/FBI fingerprint clearance and health screening requirements per Community Care Licensing.​

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • ​​Knowledge of early childhood development and developmentally appropriate practices.
  • ​Working knowledge of Title 22 Community Care Licensing regulations and basic CDE early learning guidelines.
  • ​Ability to manage classroom behavior using positive guidance and trauma-informed approaches.
  • ​Strong supervision and situational awareness to ensure child safety at all times.
  • ​Ability to follow established lesson plans and routines while remaining flexible.
  • ​Effective communication and teamwork skills in a fast-paced environment.
  • ​Ability to remain calm, patient, and responsive in dynamic classroom settings.
  • ​Strong attitude of acceptance and values the cultural, ethnic, and linguistic diversity of participating families.​

Pay Range: $20.00 - $26.00/Hour. Final compensation will be dependent upon skills & experience.
