Staff DevOps Engineer
Are you passionate about building technology that makes a real difference in people’s lives? Do you enjoy shipping code, solving meaningful problems, and learning from others in a collaborative environment? Are you curious about advancing the future of financial technology while growing your own skills and career? If so, we’d love to have you join us at SoFi!
We’re looking for a Staff DevOps Engineer to join our IT Infrastructure Engineering team, where we aim to deliver resilient, secure, and scalable solutions that support all of SoFi. Our team focuses on building shared services and is made up of four core areas: DevOps (product enablement), SRE (resiliency and availability), Security (Zero Trust and perimeter), and End Point (user devices and tooling).
We value diverse perspectives, strong engineering fundamentals, and a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement. Whether you’re from a startup, enterprise, self-taught, or university-trained background, if you love solving infrastructure challenges and building highly available and reliable systems, we want to hear from you.
What You’ll Do
- Build Scalable Solutions: Design and develop a unified platform for compute, storage, networking, and authentication on AWS using infrastructure-as-code tools. As a Staff DevOps Engineer you will be responsible for bridging development and operations, focusing on automation, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), and continuous delivery. You will help design, implement, and maintain scalable and secure cloud solutions and mentoring junior engineers. A key aspect of this role is using IaC tools like Terraform or CloudFormation to manage and automate infrastructure.
- Solve Technical Challenges: Apply sound judgment and creative thinking to tackle complex issues, balancing technical trade-offs and business goals.
- Drive Project Success: Take ownership of projects that span teams, resolve escalations, and help ensure timely delivery and alignment.
- Manage Risk: Identify and communicate risks to ensure they’re addressed proactively with proper mitigation strategies.
- Collaborate Across Teams: Work closely with engineering, security, product, and other stakeholders to understand needs and build shared success.
- Adapt and Innovate: Iterate quickly, learn from experimentation, and help improve systems and processes.
- Champion Improvements: Look for opportunities to improve our tools, pipelines, and practices — and take initiative to make things better.
- Infrastructure Management - One of the primary responsibilities of a Staff DevOps Engineer is managing the infrastructure. This goes beyond just setting up and maintaining development, testing, and production environments. You will be responsible for ensuring that the infrastructure is secure, scalable, and reliable. This includes implementing security measures to protect against cyber threats, optimizing the infrastructure to handle high traffic loads, and ensuring that backups and disaster recovery plans are in place.
- Continuous Learning - In addition to managing the infrastructure, Staff DevOps Engineers also have to stay up-to-date with the latest technologies and best practices in infrastructure management. They continuously evaluate new tools and technologies that can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the infrastructure, and implement them when appropriate.
What You’ll Need
- Cloud Experience: Hands-on experience with AWS/Azure and infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform. Familiarity with GitLab and CI/CD pipelines.
- Programming Skills: Proficiency in languages such as Go, Python, or similar.
- System Knowledge: Strong understanding of networking, compute, and storage in cloud environments.
- Problem-Solving Ability: Able to break down complex issues and balance technical depth with business context.
- Collaboration Skills: Strong communication skills with a focus on empathy, transparency, and team alignment.
- Founders Mindset: Comfortable with change, eager to learn, and willing to mentor. Founders mindset is a specific set of attitudes and behaviors that are often associated with early-stage, high-growth companies and their founders. It's a mindset characterized by a bold mission, a frontline focus, and an owner's mindset, which can be crucial for a company's sustained success and ability to adapt to market changes.
