The Engine Systems and Security team builds the lowest level components of the Roblox Engine, empowering our global community of 2M+ developers to push the boundaries of interactive gaming, no matter the target platform: mobile, desktop, console or VR. Our systems are used in every play session on the Roblox platform, necessitating high performance and infinite scale, in order to support real-time cooperative experience in infinitely sized worlds.
As an Engineering Director, you will lead multiple C++ systems engineering teams in areas such as task scheduling, memory management, in-process data storage, networking for gameplay, world streaming, and anti-tamper/anti-cheat. You will be responsible for setting and achieving the technical and product vision for the teams you lead. You will work cross-functionally and with partner teams to shape the future for Roblox. Most of all, you’ll be deep in the engineering details with teams of extremely talented low level systems engineers to continue to grow the Roblox Engine in terms of performance, reliability, functionality, and scale.
You will:
- Be a senior leader on the Systems and Security team - influencing the direction and priorities of your teams and the broader Engine organization.
- Cultivate a high-performing team by enhancing engineering practices with ideas and strategies
- Define the vision by working with your team and XFN partners, and collaborating throughout the organization
- Guide ownership of roadmaps, projects, problems, and outcomes throughout their entire life cycles
- Participate technically through coaching, code review, technical review, and architectural guidance
You have:
- 8+ years in an engineering management role
- Exceptional skills working and communicating cross-functionally with peer teams, internal & external customers, partners, and executives.
- Experience with low-level software engineering and/or game engine development including passion for software engineering in C++
- Deep care for building teams with high psychological safety and trust
- A proven ability to drive technical strategy and make architectural decisions that balance performance, scalability, and maintainability
You are:
- Able to read (and write, if necessary) code yourself in C++. We expect leaders to be very technical.
- Passionate about understanding the fundamental workings of technology, committed to delving into the intricacies "under the hood"
- Experienced in leading cross-functional teams and collaborating with product, data science, and business stakeholders
- A leader with a demonstrated capability in building teams and fostering an environment of collaboration and innovation
- A curious and motivated learner. Who can develop skills and enjoys learning new technologies
For roles that are based at our headquarters in San Mateo, CA: The starting base pay for this position is as shown below. The actual base pay is dependent upon a variety of job-related factors such as professional background, training, work experience, location, business needs and market demand. Therefore, in some circumstances, the actual salary could fall outside of this expected range. This pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. All full-time employees are also eligible for equity compensation and for benefits as described on this page.
Roles that are based in our San Mateo, CA Headquarters are in-office Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with optional in-office on Monday and Friday (unless otherwise noted).
