About the Role:

The Physical Production Legal team is seeking a dynamic Associate* to join our UCAN Film Business & Legal Affairs team (*bar-admitted attorneys may use Associate Counsel title). This role requires a proactive individual with a keen understanding of industry standards and deal contexts who can perform and execute various legal-related functions involving physical production with moderate oversight. The successful candidate will have a background in film (ideally) and/or scripted series, below-the-line production agreements, other legal-related matters, and be highly collaborative with internal and external partners across Netflix’s slate of films. They will also be able to analyze issues that arise during the production lifecycle and will possess the fundamental skill sets required for structuring, drafting, and negotiating production and employment agreements.

Responsibilities include:

  • Handle all below-the-line legal-related matters arising during development, pre-production, production, post-production, and launch.

  • Ability to structure, draft, and negotiate below-the-line production agreements with moderate oversight, ensuring alignment with Netflix and industry standard and deal contexts (e.g. physical production department head agreements; casting director agreements; line producer agreements; short term production services agreements; vendor/rental agreements; equipment rental agreements; vehicle rental agreements; aviation, charter & drone rental agreements; watercraft agreements; location agreements; production office space/stage/facilities lease agreements; post-production agreements and visual effects agreements).

  • During negotiations, clearly and succinctly communicate solutions to internal production and business partners as well as external producers and production personnel (e.g. Line Producer/UPM, Production Office Coordinator, Location Manager).

  • Efficiently resolve issues without causing delays, adapting to the fast-paced nature of production legal work.

  • Establish and maintain strong internal relationships with Business & Legal Affairs colleagues and cross functional partners including Production Management, Post Production, VFX, Labor, Finance, Health and Safety, Tax, Real Estate, Marketing/Publicity and Risk Management teams.

  • Exercise sound judgment and curiosity regarding matters of first impression or complex issues.

Requirements:

  • An undergraduate degree.

  • At least 3-5 years of proven experience in a similar business/legal affairs role in the film or television industry, including experience drafting film and/or scripted series below-the-line production agreements specifically.

  • The ability to work proactively and reliably on multiple projects simultaneously under tight timeframes in a fast-paced production environment; being able to prioritize, quickly assess risk and exercise strong judgment in the face of ambiguity.

  • The ability to organize, clarify, and communicate complex ideas quickly, succinctly and accurately.

  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively, think practically and be solutions-oriented.

  • Confidence in counseling business partners and making decisions that have legal & business impacts.

  • The ability to remain flexible and respond positively to changes.

  • Tech-savvy individual, including proficiency with Google Suite and cloud-based document and database systems.

  • Willingness to tackle matters outside of expertise.

  • JD, Paralegal certification or Bar admission accepted, but not required.
