Staff Product Designer - Accounting
Mercury
When Figma entered the design tools market in 2016, Sketch had already disrupted Adobe's decades-long dominance, and most thought the battle was over. But Figma's founders saw an opportunity others missed: design wasn't just about powerful tools: it was about collaboration, accessibility, and removing friction from creative workflows. By reimagining design as a multiplayer experience that lived in the browser, Figma didn't just create a better tool; they transformed how entire organizations approach design. Today, small businesses face a similar moment with their accounting workflows. Their legacy accounting tools have remained largely unchanged over the past decade; leaving customers feeling frustrated, overwhelmed, and confused due to cumbersome experiences.
At Mercury*, we see the same opportunity in accounting that Figma saw in design: the chance to fundamentally reimagine how work gets done. Just as Figma made design collaborative and effortless, we’re making accounting automated and delightful. As a financial technology company, our mission is to help businesses spend less time on bookkeeping and more time building. We’re not just creating another accounting tool, we’re building a platform that will become the backbone of how thousands of accounting firms support their clients. To bring this vision to life, we’re hiring a Staff Product Designer to lead design direction for a product that will serve as the linchpin of our accountant ecosystem and redefine the role Mercury plays in helping accountants and businesses thrive.
*Mercury is a financial technology company, not a bank. Banking services provided through Choice Financial Group, Column N.A., and Evolve Bank & Trust, Members FDIC.
What you’ll do at Mercury:
- Define the future of bookkeeping software by creating an experience so compelling that accounting firms willingly migrate from their legacy accounting platforms.
- Design for dual users with competing needs: founders who want simplicity and automation, and professional accountants who need power, flexibility, and deep integration with practice management tools.
- Architect a platform strategy that seamlessly integrates timely, robust accounting capabilities into Mercury’s ecosystem — including Banking, Cards, Bill Pay, and future products.
- Create visual systems that make complex financial data beautiful and accessible, setting new standards for craft in enterprise bookkeeping software.
- Pioneer collaborative workflows that transform bookkeeping from a solo activity into a multiplayer experience, where founders, accountants, and bookkeepers work seamlessly together.
- Design for platform extensibility, laying the foundation for an app marketplace that will eventually scale to 10,000+ integrations.
- Drive strategic efforts across key phases, from earning trust with early adopters to advancing Mercury’s accountant strategy through a product designed to win over firms and their clients.
- Balance immediate usability with long-term vision, shipping features that delight today's users while building toward a platform that can serve any business need.
You are the right fit if you:
- Excel at platform thinking, understanding how to design systems that start focused but can elegantly expand to serve entire ecosystems.
- Master visual craft at scale, creating design systems that maintain beauty and usability whether serving 10 customers or 10,000.
- Navigate complex stakeholder dynamics, balancing the needs of founders, accountants, bookkeepers, and Mercury's business objectives.
- Think strategically about competitive disruption, understanding how to identify and exploit incumbents' weaknesses through superior design.
- Demonstrate expertise in multi-sided platforms, having designed products that serve both end users and the professionals who support them.
- Obsess over workflow optimization, finding ways to compress hours of manual work into moments of delight.
- Bridge consumer and enterprise design, creating products that are as intuitive as consumer apps but as powerful as enterprise software.
- Lead through influence and vision, inspiring teams to build toward ambitious long-term goals while shipping incremental value.
- Understand the accounting domain or demonstrate exceptional ability to quickly master complex professional workflows.
The opportunity ahead
This role represents one of Mercury's most strategic bets. You'll be designing the product that could fundamentally change how Mercury grows—transforming us from a company that acquires customers one by one to a platform that wins entire accounting practices and their client portfolios.
Breaking into this space is no small feat — most accountants are deeply embedded in legacy software, making change difficult. But the first modern solution to truly resonate with them has the potential to redefine financial operations for millions of businesses and create a compounding growth engine that could define Mercury’s next decade.
If you're excited about using exceptional design to disrupt a massive market, building platforms that empower entire professions, and creating tools that make financial management a source of clarity rather than stress, we'd love to hear from you.
