As the People Operations Generalist, you will support and own work that directly impacts team member experience, from day-to-day operations of Hazel’s benefits, leave, and people programs to leveling up workflows to cut down on manual work and repetitive tasks. Through your close partnership with the People Operations Manager and broader People team, you will have opportunities to build people processes from scratch, provide high-level customer service, and fully embody Hazel’s Team Member Value Proposition (TMVP).

In this role, you excel and find comfort in tackling and uncovering complex problems with urgency, empathy, and accuracy. You leverage previous experiences, existing resources (Hazel’s Google Drive, Team Member Handbook, and inboxes), and new knowledge & expertise (People Team and cross-functional colleagues, HUB, Mineral, the vast internet) to solve problems. You are motivated to document your learnings because you know your future self will thank you, and you avoid doing the same work over and over and over. You lead with curiosity, not judgment, and easily build trust with team members and cross-functional colleagues. You know this isn’t “just HR” and you show people that by anticipating team member needs and exceeding expectations.

The People Operations Generalist reports to Hazel’s People Operations Manager and is a key member of the People Team. The position will ideally be located in the San Francisco Bay Area though remote locations will be considered. (Additional details below).

What You’ll Do

  • Along with the People Operations Manager, translate compliance and company policy for team members to balance business needs with team member needs.
  • Serve as a trusted point of contact on People Ops matters for team members at all stages of the employee lifecycle, from onboarding to offboarding.
  • Lead incoming new hires through orientation, covering topics like Hazel 101, benefits, and company policy. Even with tedious topics, you ensure team members are welcomed, engaged, and excited!
  • Seamlessly transition between a variety of tasks – on any given day, you may find yourself supporting team members over email and Google Meet, executing changes in Hazel’s HRIS, resolving a data discrepancy with the Recruitment team, navigating a complex leave with Payroll, drafting a policy change proposal, and/or more.
  • Partner closely with Hazel’s Payroll, Finance, and broker team to ensure benefit enrollment accuracy through monthly audits.
  • Support the development and documentation of People Operations procedures, build internal resources for team members, and ensure up-to-date information.
  • Create informative, engaging, and timely internal communications and resources highlighting Hazel benefits.
  • Periodically support People Operations & Experience special projects and coordination.

Skills & Experience You’ll Need to Bring

  • 3+ years of professional experience in People Operations/HR; bonus if this experience has been within health care, education, or start-up companies.
  • 1+ years of experience supporting team members with benefits administration. Everything from processing a qualifying life event to monthly audits of current enrollments.
  • Proven experience and comfort working in an HRIS, like pulling ad-hoc reports, updating team member profiles, and ensuring data accuracy.
  • Understanding of US employment and labor laws with a desire to proactively learn more as laws change.
  • Committed to executing projects and workflows with the confidence to tackle systems that need changing. Not only do you see what needs to be improved but you are the first one to make those improvements.
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities—supporting a team member with a sensitive issue, entering new hire data into Hazel’s HRIS, processing an internal transfer—enthusiastically and with practiced time management.
  • Comfortable navigating Excel/Google Sheets using filtering and formulas to organize large data sets to support ongoing audits and ad-hoc reports.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, always leading with curiosity and empathy.
  • Enthusiasm for team-based work and collaboration.

Total compensation for this role is market competitive, with a base salary range of $70,000 - $85,000, a 401k match, healthcare coverage, paid time off, and a broad range of other benefits and perks. Review our benefits at Hazel Health Benefits.
