We’re building developer-first AI capabilities directly into the DigitalOcean platform—and we’re looking for a Director of Engineering to lead the charge. This is a critical leadership role that will shape the technical execution and long-term vision for our AI engineering efforts. As the engineering lead for AI products, you’ll partner closely with product, data science, and infrastructure teams to deliver intuitive, performant, and scalable AI features that help our customers build smarter applications—fast.We’re looking for a Director of Engineering to lead our AI product engineering efforts. You’ll work at the intersection of platform infrastructure and applied AI, delivering developer-facing tools that make building and scaling intelligent applications simple and accessible on DigitalOcean.
This role is perfect for a hands-on technical leader who understands both the potential and the practicalities of applying AI in a developer-first environment. You’ll shape the engineering roadmap, hire and mentor a strong team, and work closely with product and data teams to define what AI at DigitalOcean should look like.
What You’ll Be Doing:
- Lead the technical strategy and execution for AI features and services across the DigitalOcean platform.
- Build and scale a team that develops customer-facing ML-powered tools, APIs, and platform integrations.
- Collaborate with product managers, data scientists, and design to translate AI ideas into production-ready features.
- Ensure high standards of security, performance, and reliability in AI systems.
- Stay on top of trends in the AI/ML space to identify emerging opportunities that align with customer needs.
- Foster a culture of ownership, technical excellence, and curiosity within the team.
What We'll Expect From You:
- 12+ years of experience in software engineering, including 5+ years in technical leadership roles.
- Deep experience delivering AI/ML-enabled products or developer tools at scale.
- Strong technical expertise in machine learning systems, infrastructure, and cloud-native architecture.
- Ability to connect the dots between customer needs, AI opportunities, and product capabilities.
- Effective communicator who can operate across engineering, data, and product functions.
- Experience mentoring and scaling inclusive, high-performing teams.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field.

- We reward our employees. The salary range for this position is $192,000 - $288,000 based on market data, relevant years of experience, and skills. You may qualify for a bonus in addition to base salary; bonus amounts are determined based on company and individual performance. We also provide equity compensation to eligible employees, including equity grants upon hire and the option to participate in our Employee Stock Purchase Program.
