Job Summary:

The Commissioning Manager is responsible for preparing and managing the successful commissioning and testing of the solar and solar plus storage projects from Mechanical Completion to Final Completion, ensuring the commissioning, quality, and close out documentation is completed in accordance with project requirements. The Commissioning Manager will work closely with third party suppliers and the utility to ensure each project is connected in accordance with the construction schedule and ensure a smooth handover to the Asset Management team.

  • Manage all commissioning activities for solar and solar plus storage projects from Mechanical Completion to Final Completion including utility interconnection.
  • Provide commissioning expertise and coordinate commissioning resources for the development of commissioning related deliverables, including participation in constructability and operability activities, and engineering design reviews.
  • Develop and implement site specific commissioning plans, schedules, and procedures to ensure compliance with utility and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct on-site inspections to ensure the system is being constructed in accordance with Issued for Construction drawings and to prepare for efficient and successful commissioning activities.
  • Lead system quality inspections, performance testing, availability and capacity testing, in accordance with the final commissioning plans and the project schedule.
  • Work closely with contractors, equipment suppliers, and the monitoring system provider, to commission the asset and its components and resolve commissioning, integration, and communication issues.
  • Coordinate load bank and witness testing in accordance with utility requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, electrical codes, and industry standards.
  • Document and report commissioning results.
  • Support project due diligence efforts, including review by Independent Engineer.
  • Identify and mitigate risks associated with commissioning and interconnection.
  • Support training and knowledge transfer to Asset Management team for ongoing operations.
  • Conduct post completion commissioning revies identifying lessons learned and developing strategy and process improvements for implementation.
  • Manage, oversee and train commissioning technicians.

Skills

The requirements listed below are representative of acquired skills required.

  • Strong knowledge of solar plus storage projects, and utility grid requirements.
  • Familiarity with interconnection processes, permitting, and regulatory compliance for solar projects.
  • Proficiency in reading electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, and interconnection drawings.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word/Excel/Power point/Project) and related project management tools such as Procore.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot electrical and communication system issues.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with experience working directly with utilities.
  • Ability for 100% travel to project sites as needed.

Education, Certifications, and Experience

Preferred but not required

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy, a related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience: 5+ years of experience in solar and energy storage commissioning, utility interconnection, or electrical project management.
  • Knowledge of renewable energy SCADA, DAS, and other system monitoring/control technologies
  • Certifications such as NABCEP PV Commissioning, PE License, or PMP are advantageous.
