Equans Embedded Generation operates multiple customer sites with large-scale embedded energy capacity across the UK, providing specialist management of onsite generation for industrial processes and the ability to export to the Grid. Role overview

The Operations Manager is responsible for the safe, efficient, and compliant running of Sullom Voe Power Station, providing leadership and strategic coordination across all operational activities. As a key member of the site leadership team, this role manages frontline technical personnel to ensure that all work is delivered to the highest standards of safety, reliability, and performance.

The Operations Manager translates client and business requirements into effective operational strategies, maintaining full accountability for the implementation and governance of the Safe System of Work (SSoW), including the Permit to Work process. This role plays a pivotal part in fostering a strong safety culture, ensuring compliance with statutory and corporate HSEQ standards, and achieving plant availability, efficiency, and performance targets through proactive planning and execution.

Key activities

  • Manage the safe, compliant, and efficient day-to-day operation of the power station.
  • Maximise plant availability, efficiency, and reliability through effective operational planning and coordination with the Maintenance Team
  • Work closely with Maintenance to anticipate potential equipment issues, optimise plant uptime, and consolidate downtime activities for efficiency
  • Oversee scheduling and usage of bulk consumables and operational materials to support plant performance.
  • Manage the implementation of operational procedures, work instructions, and systems under the Business Management System (BMS), ensuring alignment with ISO standards.
  • Provide effective line management of the operations team, ensuring alignment with performance targets and operational goals.
  • Set clear departmental objectives and targets and monitor progress against agreed KPIs.
  • Implement a continual training and development programme to ensure staff competence aligns with the Competency Matrix.
  • Carry out staff appraisals, performance reviews, and development discussions in line with Equans policies.
  • Promote a culture of collaboration, accountability, and safety within the team.
  • Develop and support a flexible workforce model to meet varying operational demands.
  • Prepare and deliver accurate reports to the Management Team on operational performance, equipment availability, and plant efficiency.
  • Lead and contribute to continual improvement initiatives across health, safety, environment, and operations.
  • Ensure high standards of housekeeping and cleanliness across operational areas in line with Equans expectations.
  • Maintain a strong visible presence, reinforcing behavioural safety, operational discipline, and site pride.
  • Deputise for the Power Station Manager during periods of leave and absence, ensuring seamless operational leadership, decision-making continuity, and adherence to safety and performance standards.

Skills, qualifications & experience

  • HNC/HND or Bachelor's Degree in a relevant discipline (SCQF Level 7+ / NVQ Level 4+ / Bachelor's Degree).
  • Recognised Health, Safety & Environmental qualification, such as NEBOSH National General Certificate
  • Site Controller appointment (by Client) to their permit to work system
  • Experience in implementing and managing Safe Systems of Work (SSoW), including Permit to Work, isolations, and energy control systems
  • Experience leading, mentoring, and developing multi-skilled operational teams, ideally in a 24/7 or continuous process environment
