As a Senior Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) at Commure + Athelas, you will lead on‑site discovery, architect end‑to‑end solutions, and own production deployments for health system partners. You’ll operate as the technical owner from problem framing through go‑live and scale, partnering directly with clinicians, operations, IT/security, and executives. You’ll mentor other FDEs, uplevel our playbooks, and influence the product roadmap to drive measurable outcomes in patient access, affordability, and care quality. For those interested, this role has a clear path into FDE leadership (FDE Lead → FDE Manager) as you demonstrate impact and coach others.
This Full Time position requires working 50% of your time in our Mountain View office.
What you’ll do
Own outcomes. Lead multi‑workstream engagements from scoping/SOW through production launch and adoption; define timelines, risks, and success metrics (e.g., time‑to‑note close, same‑day close rate, throughput, NPS).
Run discovery at the bedside and in the boardroom. Shadow clinical workflows, synthesize requirements, and translate ambiguity into crisp problem statements and ROI hypotheses.
Architect & build. Design and implement integrations (FHIR/HL7/X12 APIs), data pipelines, services, and UIs; take 0→1 prototypes to hardened 1→N solutions.
Ship on‑site. Travel up to 50% to build with users, pilot rapidly, and demo to executives; iterate in days, not quarters.
Ensure security & compliance. Design with HIPAA/SOC 2 principles, least‑privilege access, and auditability in mind.
Reliability & operations. Instrument systems, define SLOs, set up monitoring/alerting, and lead incident response and root‑cause analysis.
AI & automation. Apply LLMs/NLP, speech, workflow engines, and RTLS to reduce administrative burden and unlock new capabilities.
Stakeholder management. Drive exec‑level communication, align on decisions, manage dependencies, and unblock teams.
Documentation & playbooks. Author runbooks, integration guides, and repeatable patterns to scale the practice.Mentor & multiply. Coach junior FDEs, review designs/code, and model a culture of urgency, ownership, and craftsmanship.
What you have
4–6+ years in software engineering and/or field/solutions/forward‑deployed roles, with a track record of owning customer‑facing deployments.
Fluency in Python and TypeScript/React; strong SQL; experience building and consuming REST/gRPC APIs.
Comfort with cloud & DevOps: containers (Docker), CI/CD, infrastructure‑as‑code (e.g., Terraform), and one major cloud (AWS/GCP/Azure).Integration experience (healthcare a plus): Epic/Cerner, FHIR R4, HL7 v2, SMART on FHIR, and/or X12 (270/271, 835/837); SSO/OIDC.
Practical security mindset: HIPAA concepts, PHI handling, encryption, and audit logging.
Strong product sense and bias to action—able to shape ambiguous problems, make smart tradeoffs, and ship quickly.
Executive‑caliber written and verbal communication; equally effective with engineers, clinicians, and operational leaders.
Willingness to travel up to 50% to customer sites.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent real‑world experience).
Nice to have
Hands‑on with LLM/AI systems (prompting, RAG, vector stores, evaluation) and/or speech‑to‑text and real‑time pipelines.
Domain experience in RCM, clinical documentation, intake & eligibility/benefits, or command center operations.
Observability depth: logs/metrics/tracing, performance tuning, SLO design.
If you’re energized by solving messy, high‑stakes problems side‑by‑side with the people delivering care—and you love to build, ship, measure, and repeat—you’ll thrive here.
